Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who suffered a fracture in his left wrist during the game against the Cincinnati Bengals, expressed his intention to return to training on Thursday.
“It feels better than Sunday, that’s for sure. I’m thankful to be able to work today with head athletic trainer Gabe Amponsah and focus on rehab. I’ll try to get back on the field tomorrow and see what I can do,” Rodgers stated.
However, the date to determine his participation in the Week 12 game against the Chicago Bears is still unclear. Rodgers emphasized that to play against the Bears, he must be able to “protect” himself, prioritizing safety over pain management.
When asked if he had an extra incentive to play on Sunday, given his history with the Bears, Rodgers responded with a smile, mentioning his winning record against them and his appreciation for the city of Chicago.
The Steelers’ medical staff is working on finding adequate protection for Rodgers’ injured wrist. The quarterback indicated that he currently feels more comfortable receiving the ball from the shotgun formation, but the goal is to be able to receive it under center.
“It would be more difficult to receive the ball under center than to receive it in the shotgun,” he stated.
Rodgers confirmed that his injury is not an aggravation of a pre-existing problem, but occurred in a play in the second quarter against the Bengals, when he fell backward under pressure. Although he played one more play before halftime, he did not return to the field after the intermission.
In his absence, Mason Rudolph completed 12 of 16 attempts for 126 yards and a touchdown in two offensive possessions. In Wednesday’s practice, Rudolph took first-team reps, backed by Will Howard, a sixth-round pick.
Rodgers praised Rudolph, describing him as a great backup and a professional ready to play. He highlighted his meticulous preparation and dedication to detail.
Rudolph is familiar with preparing to spring into action at the last minute and has had experience in different roles since being drafted by the Steelers in 2018.
