Aaron Rodgers Remains Evasive About His Return to MetLife Stadium

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was evasive when asked about his upcoming game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, downplaying the season opener. During his weekly meeting with the media on Wednesday, Rodgers avoided any comment about his return to the stadium where he played for the Jets, focusing on the importance of the start of the season. When asked if the game had a special meaning due to the place and the opponent, Rodgers replied briefly: “Yes, it’s Week 1.” Similarly, Rodgers was concise in describing his emotional expectations when entering the MetLife field. “I’ll only be excited for Week 1,” he stated. Rodgers was released by the Jets in March, after a season marked by an Achilles injury and a 5-12 campaign. Subsequently, he signed a one-year, $13.65 million contract with the Steelers. The Jets, for their part, signed former Steelers quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal. For Rodgers, joining the Steelers marks the second time in his career that he’s starting with a new organization after spending 18 years with the Green Bay Packers. So far, the transition has been smooth.

“This is the second time, it’s the new new. I love being here. The way I’ve been received has been really special, from top to bottom, to the fans, the guys in the locker room and the sports staff, the men and women who work for this organization have been really special”.

Despite familiarity with Jets players, Rodgers remained reserved about whether he still keeps in touch with them. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin predicted Rodgers’ attitude in his weekly press conference, commenting that Rodgers would likely keep the situation under control. Tight end Pat Freiermuth indicated that Rodgers is focused on the game itself, not the return to his old field. Wide receiver DK Metcalf also highlighted Rodgers’ excitement to play, more than for the opponent. Metcalf, like Rodgers, is eager to play at MetLife, but for the opportunity for the starting offense to demonstrate its potential in a game. Tomlin, for his part, is not worried about the lack of action in the game, trusting in the team’s daily work and their preparation. Metcalf shares this confidence, downplaying concerns about the start of the season.
