PITTSBURGH – Aaron Rodgers remains steadfast and avoids any emotional distractions as he prepares for the first game of the season. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback downplayed the encounter against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, his former home.

Rodgers: “It’s Week 1”

During the weekly press conference, Rodgers concisely answered questions about the meaning of the match. “It’s Week 1,” he stated, downplaying any special feeling about returning to the stadium where he previously played. The same brevity was demonstrated when talking about his emotions upon entering the field: “I’ll be excited for Week 1.” Rodgers joined the Steelers after a brief and unfortunate stint with the Jets, where he suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the first game of 2023, leading to a 5-12 season in 2024. Now, with the Steelers, Rodgers seeks a fresh start, signing a one-year, $13.65 million contract.

This is the second time I’m starting over, so it’s the new new. I love being here. The way I’ve been received has been really special, from the top to the fans, the players in the locker room and the sports staff, the men and women who work for this organization have been really special.

Despite familiarity with some Jets players, Rodgers remained reserved about whether he kept in contact with them. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin predicted this attitude, indicating that Rodgers would likely keep the situation in perspective as just another game. Tight end Pat Freiermuth and wide receiver DK Metcalf, Rodgers’ teammates, backed the quarterback’s stance, highlighting his focus on the game itself and not on the personal significance of the return. Metcalf emphasized Rodgers’ passion for football and his desire to compete and win. Coach Tomlin also downplayed concerns about the lack of action in the stadium, relying on the team’s daily preparation. Metcalf shared this confidence, dismissing external concerns about the start of the season.
