Philip Rivers Considers a Future in the NFL as a Coach
Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers has expressed his willingness to consider a larger role in the world of professional American football in the future, although he is currently focused on his role as a high school coach. Rivers, 44, came out of retirement last month to help the Colts, who were in a difficult situation due to injuries to several quarterbacks. Now, the veteran player plans to return to retirement and his position as head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama. Your son, Gunner, is in his senior year of high school and is one of the top quarterback prospects nationally.Although Rivers does not rule out the possibility of coaching in the NFL in the future, he clarified that there have been no conversations about it. During his time in Indianapolis, Rivers worked with the team’s youngest quarterbacks, which has generated speculation about his possible full-time foray into coaching. Rivers believes he could succeed at this level. “Yes, I believe, as humbly as I can say it, that I could coach at this level,” Rivers stated. “I know enough about the game and about the players, and from a leadership standpoint, camaraderie, all of that comes with it. But then again, that’s not something I’m looking for. If I learned anything in the last four weeks, it’s that you have to live one day at a time. Because there was a Sunday afternoon when I didn’t plan to be in Indianapolis the next day. And then, 24 hours later, I was here.” Rivers joined the team after a phone call from coach Shane Steichen, following Daniel Jones’ injury. Steichen does not regret the decision to count on Rivers, who played respectably given the circumstances and would make the same decision again. There’s nothing concrete about it. I think if anything this past month has taught me that you’re open, obviously, to anything, I guess. And then you go from there. But I’m looking forward to going home and reuniting with those [players], getting back with my family and getting to the senior season of Gunner.
