Anthony Richardson Recovers for Colts Camp
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson appears to be recovered from issues in his right shoulder, according to a source close to the team. The news comes as the Colts prepare for the start of training camp next week.
Richardson, who underwent surgery to repair an injury to the AC joint of his throwing shoulder during the 2023 season, missed the last two weeks of preseason practices in June due to shoulder discomfort.
The team’s medical staff believed that rest would alleviate the problem, and it seems this has been effective. Richardson also sought external opinions from experts who agreed with this plan. According to the source, Richardson has been in Florida for weeks working with personal trainers, throwing the ball with power.
It’s important to note that the Colts haven’t had the opportunity to personally evaluate Richardson, as the players have been on their summer vacations. This will happen when Richardson returns to Indianapolis for training camp next week, where players must report no later than Tuesday.
It’s possible that Richardson will have a throwing limitation at the beginning of camp to allow him to gradually increase his activity and avoid fatigue, according to the source. This will be decided by the Colts’ medical staff. However, if no unforeseen problems arise, Richardson is expected to dive into camp amid an expected battle for the starting position with veteran Daniel Jones, who signed a one-year, $14 million contract with Indianapolis in the spring.
The Colts have described the situation as an open competition, with coach Shane Steichen emphatically stating that the most consistent player will be named the starter.
This is a crucial moment for Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. His completion percentage decreased to 47.7% in his second season in 2024, compared to 59.5% in his rookie season in 2023. He also missed four games due to two different injuries and another two starts during a brief stint when he temporarily lost his position to Joe Flacco.
Before Richardson finished his preseason work, Steichen said Richardson was on a good track. The coach said the young quarterback “was in a very good place” and “was progressing very well.”
