Jalen Ramsey ejected after incident with Ja’Marr Chase

In a tense encounter between the Steelers and the Bengals, Jalen Ramsey, Steelers safety, was ejected for throwing a punch at Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. The incident occurred in the final quarter of the game, leaving everyone surprised. The situation was triggered after Chase apparently spat at Ramsey. Ramsey himself stated after the game that Chase had spat at him before he responded with the punch.

He spat on me. Respectfully, I don’t give a damn about football after that. I’ll always be in favor of trash talk, things like that. I really enjoy that part of the game. I think people know…

A recording captured by FOX 19 WXIX-TV, shows what appears to be saliva coming out of Chase’s mouth just before Ramsey’s hit.

On the other hand, Chase denied Ramsey’s accusation.

I’ve never opened my mouth to that guy. I didn’t spit on anyone.

When asked what provoked Ramsey’s reaction, Chase replied that he was probably bothered by some of the words he said. Both players had been exchanging words throughout the match.

The NFL will review the incident between Ramsey and Chase, according to a league spokesperson. The game referees did not see Chase spit at Ramsey, according to referee Bill Vinovich. Both Ramsey and Chase were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct on a previous play, when Ramsey said Chase tried to block him. The two had been arguing throughout the game. After the initial unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the two continued arguing while the Bengals called a timeout before running their fourth-down play. Once Chase appeared to spit at the Steelers’ safety, Ramsey threw the punch and was ejected for his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Ramsey was escorted off the field by a Steelers staff member. Offensive lineman Broderick Jones tried to calm Ramsey before the defensive back entered the locker room. The expulsion occurred shortly after Ramsey switched to slot cornerback due to Brandin Echols’ injury. Ramsey started the game as a safety, but moved to replace Echols, and Chuck Clark came in as safety. The Steelers played the game without starting cornerback Darius Slay, who is in concussion protocol. Before Sunday, Ramsey had only been ejected once in his career, in 2017 when he played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and also faced the Bengals.
