Michael Mayer Suffers Head Injury and Leaves the Game
LANDOVER, Md. – Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer will not return to Sunday’s game after suffering a head injury during the first quarter against the Washington Commanders.
The situation occurred in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, when Mayer received a blow to the head while tackling wide receiver Jaylin Lane on a 25-yard punt return.
The players from both teams knelt as Mayer was attended to by the trainers on the field. Subsequently, Mayer left the field and went to the locker room. Initially, he was listed as questionable before being ruled out at the start of the third quarter.
In two seasons, Mayer, a second-round pick, accumulated 460 yards and two touchdowns with 48 receptions. The former Notre Dame standout had only 21 receptions for 156 yards, as he was absent for seven weeks last year for personal reasons.
The technical staff had high expectations for Mayer in his third season. He had a good training camp and affirmed that he felt better than ever from a mental and emotional point of view.
Mayer had four receptions for 38 yards in the opening week victory against the New England Patriots. In the Week 2 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, he achieved two receptions for nine yards.
