Brock Purdy Could Return to the Field this Sunday

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Brock Purdy, could be back in action this weekend against the Arizona Cardinals, according to coach Kyle Shanahan. Purdy missed last Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints due to a toe injury. However, the latest news suggests a faster-than-expected recovery. Last week, Shanahan had called Purdy’s participation “unlikely.” However, on Wednesday, the coach adopted a more optimistic tone, indicating that Purdy will participate in limited training and suggesting the possibility of him playing in the home opener. During the media-open portion, Purdy made some throws in individual drills.

Purdy has been dealing with toe and left shoulder injuries, suffered in the Week 1 victory against the Seattle Seahawks. Shanahan has indicated that the toe injury has been the most significant problem, preventing him from playing against the Saints.

Initially, Shanahan mentioned the possibility of Purdy missing several games, but both he and general manager John Lynch have indicated that the situation will be evaluated weekly.

Kyle Shanahan
After the game in New Orleans, Purdy seemed to be in good shape and told reporters “we’ll see” about his status for Week 3. Shanahan also left open the possibility of his return this week. Although the 49ers would prefer not to use Purdy unless he is fully recovered, Shanahan acknowledged that there is a possibility that Purdy will be a backup against the Cardinals if he continues to progress. In the event that Purdy is unable to play on Sunday, Mac Jones, who threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns in his debut with San Francisco against the Saints, would be the starter again. In the locker room on Wednesday, several 49ers players expressed their confidence in the quarterback, regardless of whether it’s Purdy or Jones who plays against the Cardinals.

“In this league, whether you’re a starter or a substitute, you have to be ready to play at any moment”.

Christian McCaffrey
While Purdy shows good development, the 49ers are also preparing to practice without several key players. McCaffrey (calf/rest), Nick Bosa (rest), Trent Williams (knee/rest), Jauan Jennings (shoulder, ankle) and Kyle Juszczyk (concussion) would not participate. In addition, on Wednesday, the 49ers placed Ben Bartch on the injured reserve list due to a high ankle sprain, which will keep him out for at least four games. Connor Colby is expected to take his place in the lineup.
