Brock Purdy Doubtful for 49ers Game Against Saints

The San Francisco 49ers began preparations for their Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints with uncertainty surrounding the participation of their quarterback, Brock Purdy. Purdy is dealing with toe and left shoulder injuries, suffered during the second quarter of Sunday’s victory against the Seattle Seahawks. Coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated that the toe injury is the biggest concern, and on Wednesday he signaled that Purdy is unlikely to play against the Saints.

I think it’s very difficult.

Shanahan did not rule out the possibility of Purdy missing several games due to these injuries. Purdy’s inclusion in Monday’s injury report was a surprise, as he finished the game against Seattle leading the offense that scored the winning touchdown and was not mentioned in the post-game injury report. Purdy completed 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Shanahan explained that Purdy injured his toe while running for 7 yards with two minutes left in the first half. In that play, Purdy veered left and was tackled as he fell toward the sideline by Seahawks safety Julian Love. On Wednesday, Purdy was listed as a non-participant in practice, indicating that Mac Jones could be the starter. Jones, who signed as a free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, had an outstanding preseason, impressing his teammates with his consistent performance. The 49ers are also considering the possibility of bringing in another quarterback to provide depth behind Jones if Purdy can’t play. They have Adrian Martinez on the practice squad and tried out veteran Mike White on Wednesday. The biggest challenge for San Francisco is the number of injuries they are suffering in other positions, which makes any movement in the squad difficult. In addition to Purdy, the 49ers have other concerns this week. Running back Christian McCaffrey (calf), left tackle Trent Williams (knee), Nick Bosa, defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), and receiver Jauan Jennings (shoulder) also did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Jennings’ situation could be the most delicate, as he left Sunday’s game due to a shoulder injury and did not return. However, the tests performed did not reveal significant damage, and Shanahan expressed hope that he can play against the Saints.

He has a chance to play and we hope he does.
