The New England Patriots have reinforced their quarterback position by claiming former New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito via waivers this Wednesday. To make room for DeVito, the Patriots released veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne after negotiations for a possible trade fell through.DeVito, who earned the affection of Giants fans as an inspiring player who emerged as an undrafted free agent in 2023, joins Drake Maye and primary backup Joshua Dobbs in New England. The Patriots have been looking for a third quarterback since they released undrafted free agent Ben Wooldridge on Friday, and they were able to see DeVito in action in last week’s final preseason game, where he completed 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Vrabel commented that the Patriots are satisfied with Dobbs in the preseason, highlighting that he has “calmed down in the games” after making some mistakes in training. The coach also explained that each move they make does not necessarily indicate the players’ performance in that position, but rather seeks to strengthen the overall construction of the squad. The Giants had a solid quarterback position, with Russell Wilson, Jaxson Dart, and Jameis Winston.Giants general manager Joe Schoen expressed that it may be difficult, depending on how the roster is set up, where there are some needs, and where they decide to delve into certain positions. He was happy for DeVito and wished him the best.In addition to DeVito, the Patriots also obtained cornerback Charles Woods, coming from the Los Angeles Rams, also through waivers. Second-year receiver Javon Baker was released to make room for Woods on the roster. As for Bourne, the nine-year veteran has accumulated 292 receptions for 3,714 yards and 22 touchdowns throughout his career and was one of eight receivers who were included on the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster on Tuesday. The Vikings had expressed interest in Bourne before trading for Adam Thielen.Bourne was entering his fifth season in New England and providing safety coverage behind Stefon Diggs, Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas, and Mack Hollins on the depth chart. The Patriots also have rookies Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III, along with Javon Baker, selected in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, at the receiver position.Bourne hadn’t practiced since August 1st after suffering an injury, but was close to returning to the field, according to a source.Simply strengthening our roster, certainly in a position of high demand.
