MarShawn Lloyd: More Injury Issues for the Packers Running Back

The bad luck with injuries continues for Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd. A new hamstring issue could sideline him for the first regular season game and possibly beyond. Lloyd, who was expected to be the backup for running back Josh Jacobs, had to leave Saturday’s preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts after a 33-yard reception in the second quarter.

“Some time will be lost,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said on Sunday.

Lloyd missed almost all of his rookie season last year due to injuries and an illness. The player selected in the second round of 2024 missed the start of his first training camp due to a hip injury and then suffered a hamstring injury in his first preseason action. He returned for Week 2 of the regular season but suffered an ankle injury and was placed on the injured reserve list. Just as he was preparing to return, he underwent an emergency appendectomy in November. Then he suffered another hamstring injury after recovering from his appendectomy. On Saturday, he was making his debut in 2025 after missing the first preseason game due to a groin injury, leading many in the Packers to say they haven’t seen a player with this kind of bad luck with injuries in a long time.

“To be honest, I haven’t seen it and I don’t think any of us have, or very few of us have,” said Packers running backs coach Ben Sirmans. “It’s one of those unfortunate occurrences, but at some point, the way the player works, you just have to believe that at some point he’ll overcome all this and be fine.”

The Packers could also be without rookie defensive lineman Barryn Sorrell, who suffered a knee injury against the Colts. LaFleur said he is expected to miss several weeks. Meanwhile, safety Omar Brown had to spend another night in an Indianapolis hospital after leaving Saturday’s game due to what LaFleur called a lung injury.

“Hopefully he’ll be discharged tomorrow,” LaFleur said on Sunday.

Quarterback Jordan Love, who underwent surgery on his left thumb on Tuesday, could return to practice as early as Monday, LaFleur said. Love did not play against the Colts, but he threw during pre-game warmups, being careful not to put his non-throwing hand on the ball.
