Sean McDermott Concerned After Bills’ Crushing Defeat

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott expressed his concern after his team’s heavy defeat to the Chicago Bears in the second preseason game. The result, a resounding 38-0, did not meet the team’s expectations. The Bills, who fielded their backup players against the Bears’ starters, including Caleb Williams, were outgained in yards, with a difference of 528 to 180.

“It certainly isn’t up to our standards, what we expect. We have a lot of work to do, that’s very clear. No matter who’s on the field, the ones, the twos, the threes, the fours, whoever it is, we expect them to perform and we expect our level of performance to be much better than that,” McDermott declared.

McDermott explained that Josh Allen and other starters rested to prioritize their health, having seen enough of them in the previous week’s joint practices with the Bears. The coach emphasized the need for improvement in the performance of the Bills’ second unit, especially on defense, which struggled against Williams and Chicago’s starting offense.

“Going out and playing against their ones, I hope, we hope, to compete with them, and that wasn’t the case early on. And then our twos, who were on the field against their twos, and our threes against their threes, didn’t get much better.”

Caleb Williams, in his preseason debut, completed 6 of 10 passes for 107 yards and a passer rating of 130, leading a 92-yard offensive drive that culminated in a 36-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus. McDermott commented that Williams showed a “no-nonsense” game and quickly got into rhythm. The Bills have conceded a total of 72 points and 924 yards in their first two preseason games. Despite not wanting to overreact to the preseason results of the second- and third-string players, McDermott admitted that he expects to see improvements before the start of the regular season. “I’m worried about many things after tonight… There’s a lot that needs to be cleaned up,” he stated. The Bills, AFC East champions five times, will begin their regular season at home against the Baltimore Ravens on September 7.
