NFLPA Faces Transition Period After Resignations
The president of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), Jalen Reeves-Maybin, stated on Tuesday that the union is committed to “serving the best interests of our members.” In addition, he promised that a vote for an interim executive director would be held “in the near future.” The statement on Tuesday comes amid a turbulent month for the union, as both CEO Lloyd Howell Jr. and Chief Strategy Officer JC Tretter resigned amid scandals that had enveloped Howell’s brief tenure.Reeves-Maybin went on to say that, although the union has been tested lately, they remain committed to the values of integrity, responsibility, and progress to serve the best interests of its members. The Executive Committee and the Board of Player Representatives of the NFLPA are in the process of selecting an interim executive director. The Board approved a resolution in accordance with the NFLPA Constitution to allow for the eventual vote of said interim leader and agreed on the processes and terms for selecting a candidate. Due diligence is being carried out and a vote will be held in the near future, as soon as that process is completed. Meanwhile, Reeves-Maybin is in close contact with the NFLPA’s Executive Leadership Team to ensure good governance practices and the continuity of the union’s business until an interim executive director is elected. Reeves-Maybin was a linebacker for the Detroit Lions before the team released him last spring. He took over as president of the NFLPA in March 2024. Tretter, former NFLPA president, was seen as a possible replacement for Howell until Tretter resigned from the organization on Sunday, saying he was “done taking bullets for the (NFLPA) on things I wasn’t a part of and didn’t do.” Howell resigned on Thursday, saying he no longer wanted to be a “distraction” for the NFLPA. This occurred after several recent reports that scrutinized Howell’s management in the position. The day after his resignation, multiple instances of Howell spending on trips to various strip clubs were reported. The players who make up the NFLPA are united not only by our shared experiences on and off the field, but also by our shared commitment to the success and well-being of our members.
