NFL Employee Injured in Manhattan Building Shooting

An employee of the National Football League (NFL) was seriously injured on Monday in a shooting in a building in midtown Manhattan, which houses the NFL offices and some of the country’s most important financial firms, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell in a memo to employees. In the shooting at 345 Park Ave., four people died, including an off-duty New York City police officer, and another person was seriously injured, authorities reported.

One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack. He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family. We believe that all of our employees are safe and accounted for, and the building has been nearly evacuated.

Goodell also noted that there would be “an increased security presence” at the league’s offices “in the coming days and weeks.” In addition, he indicated that New York-based employees should work remotely on Tuesday or take the day off. The police identified the shooter as Shane Tamura, from Las Vegas, who committed suicide. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported in a press conference that Tamura had a “documented history of mental health issues,” but the motive for the attack is still unknown.

We are working to understand why he chose this particular place.

The New York City Fire Department reported that emergency crews were called to the Park Avenue office building around 6:30 p.m. for a report of shots fired. At that moment, NFL employees were told to shelter in place. The NFL offices are located on floors five through eight of the 44-story building. Four other individuals sustained minor injuries while attempting to escape. The mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, stated that the authorities are still “unraveling” what happened.
