Tre’von Moehrig Loses Appeal and Misses Game against the Rams

Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig failed to get his one-game suspension overturned for hitting San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings in the groin area. The league confirmed the decision Wednesday night.

Moehrig, who is also dealing with an ankle injury according to coach Dave Canales, will miss Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. The suspension will cost Moehrig $65,000, approximately one-eighteenth of his $1.17 million salary.

Derrick Brooks, one of the three hearing officers jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFL Players Association, was the one who ruled on the appeal.

Near the end of Monday night’s game, which the 49ers won 20-9, the television cameras captured the moment Moehrig delivered a blow to Jennings’ groin. Jennings did not immediately respond and was seen asking the officials to call a foul against Moehrig. However, Jennings hit Moehrig after the game.

It’s a tough loss for the Panthers, who could also be without their starting cornerback Jaycee Horn, who suffered a concussion against the 49ers. Horn remains in concussion protocol.

Carolina is 6-6, half a game behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5) in the NFC South, before Sunday’s home game against the Rams, who are 8-2.

Moehrig will be eligible to return to the Panthers’ active roster next Monday.
