Terry McLaurin Expresses Frustration in Contract Negotiations with the Commanders
Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin has expressed his frustration and disappointment with the progress of contract extension talks. McLaurin, speaking to the media, indicated that negotiations are at a crucial moment and that an agreement needs to be reached.
During a press session after filming a commercial, McLaurin expressed that he finds it difficult to imagine playing without progress in contract discussions. “I’ve been pretty frustrated, I’m not going to lie,” the player stated. “Everything that has happened has been quite disappointing. I want to continue my career here, I’ve built my life here, so I want to be here. Seeing how things have developed has been disappointing.”
Despite his discontent, McLaurin made it clear he wanted to stay with the team. The receiver, who has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for five consecutive seasons, emphasized his commitment to the Commanders.
McLaurin missed the team’s mandatory minicamp last month. In 2022, he signed a three-year extension for $68,364,000. This year, his base salary is $15.5 million with a salary cap impact of $25.5 million.
The player revealed that there have been no conversations with the Commanders in the last month and that he has not yet decided whether he will show up for training camp if his contract situation is not resolved.
McLaurin’s comments come a day after Garrett Wilson, also an Ohio State graduate, agreed to a four-year, $130 million extension with the New York Jets.
When asked about how the Wilson deal affects his situation, McLaurin responded that he cannot speculate, but highlighted that elite receivers are being well-compensated in the current NFL and that he has proven to be a number one receiver.
McLaurin will turn 30 in September, while Wilson is 25.
Last season, McLaurin had his most productive campaign, playing with Jayden Daniels, the best quarterback he has played with in his six-year career. Daniels will be the first Washington quarterback to start consecutive seasons as a starter since Kirk Cousins (2015-17).
In the last season, McLaurin recorded 13 touchdown receptions, a career high, and 82 receptions for 1,096 yards.
McLaurin concluded by saying that if the Commanders “don’t feel like I’m part of their future, that’s fine, just tell me. I’m an adult and I can handle harsh truths.”
