The Lions seek revenge after the loss to the Packers

The 0-1 start to the season for the Detroit Lions isn’t ideal, but head coach Dan Campbell reminded his players after Sunday’s loss that the situation “isn’t what it seems” inside the visiting locker room. After suffering a 27-13 defeat against the Packers, breaking their three-game winning streak at Lambeau Field, the Lions’ offense failed to score a touchdown for three quarters for the first time since 2023. After leading the league in points per game (33.2) last season, Campbell noted that they never found an offensive rhythm and it showed.

I thought we would be cleaner than we were. I thought we would be much cleaner than we were. And it wasn’t that clean, but then again, you’re talking about some plays that were critical. But, as I told the team, this is very correctable. Everything that showed up is very correctable and we will address it head-on.

They will have to keep working to solve the problems of the adaptation of the new offensive coordinator John Morton, as well as a renewed offensive line, with the new starting guards Christian Mahogany and rookie Tate Ratledge in the mix. The Lions struggled on both sides from the start of the game, losing 17-3 at halftime, and never recovered.

So, as I told you, let’s clean up the tape. We made some critical mistakes at the worst possible times and if you don’t make them, you take them out of the equation, it looks different. You feel like it could be a totally different scenario, but we made those critical mistakes at the worst time. So, we’re going to learn from it. We’ll clean it up. It gives us a little barometer of where we are in Game 1 and that’s okay. It’s always about getting better no matter what. We’ll take it and get better.

In general, Detroit averaged 3.8 yards per play, which was the second-lowest amount in any game under Campbell since he arrived in 2021. Their 246 total yards were also the second-fewest in any game since 2022, as quarterback Jared Goff struggled to find a rhythm. Goff finished with 31 of 39 passes for 225 yards and an interception, while he was sacked four times. His only passing touchdown came in the final minute of the final quarter with a 13-yard pass to rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa on his first career reception. However, Goff is confident that the team can overcome its initial difficulties with Chicago as the next home opponent for Week 2.

We have good players. We have good coaches. We’ll be fine. There needs to be urgency for improvement. There has to be. Today wasn’t even good enough offensively and we have a lot of work to do.

Before Sunday’s game, the Lions had scored 14 points in their last 25 games (including the playoffs), which was the longest active streak in the NFL. At first, they tried to feed running back Jahmyr Gibbs, but he struggled with 50 yards on 19 touches. Gibbs’ 10 receptions for 31 yards were the fewest receiving yards while recording at least 10 receptions in a game since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. Looking ahead, Lions All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown sees better preparation and more accountability during this upcoming practice week as a way to bounce back from the season-opening loss. They will rely on their circle of veterans to address and fix their deficiencies.

You can’t dwell too much on this loss. Obviously, you’re going to correct what went wrong, but after that you have to move on and be able to forget about it and move on to the next week because you’re only as good as your last week in this league. It’s Week 1. It’s early.
