Lions Cut Hendon Hooker

The Detroit Lions have made the decision to release quarterback Hendon Hooker, according to a source. This decision comes after Saturday’s home defeat in the last preseason game against Houston. Head coach Dan Campbell suggested that Hooker could benefit from a change of scenery. Hooker, who is 27 years old, struggled with turnovers during training camp and the preseason. This cost him the QB2 position, which is now held by former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kyle Allen, behind four-time Pro Bowler Jared Goff.

How much development do you think there still is? Does the player sometimes need a change of scenery? What about our own depth in other areas?

Detroit selected Hooker with the 68th overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft from Tennessee, despite the fact that he was still recovering from a torn ACL. The choice was made with the future in mind. Hooker became the franchise’s highest-drafted quarterback since Matthew Stafford was No. 1 in 2009, but Hooker only appeared in three regular season games. At the end of July, Hooker stated that he felt his camp had been “average”, with some things to improve, but that he remained confident in his ability to secure the QB2 position. Hooker still felt he had made a “strong statement” to earn a spot on the final 53-man roster, even after throwing an interception against the Houston Texans in their final preseason game.

For the work I’ve done and the tape I’ve recorded in practice and a couple of plays in the game, I’ve shown some good things. I still have some things to work on. Like I said before, I made a strong statement.
