Jason Licht talks about Mike Evans’ departure
Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht spoke for the first time about the departure of wide receiver Mike Evans, who signed with the San Francisco 49ers in free agency. Licht expressed that he does not feel “betrayed” by Evans’ decision. Evans, a historical leader in franchise scoring, had previously expressed his desire to play his entire career with the Buccaneers. Licht lamented Evans’ departure, describing the situation as “mourning”.Licht highlighted that Evans was his first draft pick as general manager in 2014 and that he played a crucial role in the 2020 NFC championship. A framed jersey with Evans’ number 13 hangs in Licht’s house, with a message dedicated to his son. The general manager revealed that the Buccaneers’ offer was significantly higher than that of the 49ers, but they respected Evans’ decision. Evans’ contract with the 49ers is for three years and $42.5 million, although it is actually a one-year deal with $14.3 million guaranteed. Licht and Evans maintained constant communication during the offseason, even texting each other during the Super Bowl. Evans was excited about the Bucs’ young receiving corps and the arrival of new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. Licht stated that they did everything possible to retain Evans and that the relationship between the two is very good. He also mentioned that he does not believe Evans’ departure was related to the continuity of coach Todd Bowles. Regarding Evans’ non-extension of contract after tying Jerry Rice’s record of 11 consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards, Licht said he has no regrets and that Evans understood he could stay on the team as long as he wanted. Evans was looking for a new chapter in his career, with more opportunities to impact the game. Licht acknowledged that the competition in the Bucs’ receiving corps may have influenced his decision. Licht declined to comment on whether the 49ers could have contacted Evans before the start of free agency, but he did note that players often talk to each other. Finally, Licht expressed his happiness for Evans and for finding a place where he feels comfortable, recognizing that the 49ers are also working to build their team.Mike gave us everything he had during his 12 seasons here and established himself as one of the best players in the league. I don’t feel betrayed. He earned the right to make this decision.
