Tyrod Taylor Ready for Season Start with the Jets
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – New York Jets backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor will be available for the season opener. Taylor, who missed the preseason due to arthroscopic knee surgery, has been confirmed by coach Aaron Glenn for the debut. The news comes after the Jets’ 19-17 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. There was some uncertainty about Taylor’s availability. When the surgery was announced on August 12, Taylor was expected to return in time to be the second quarterback in the opening game on September 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. During that time, the Jets evaluated two veterans, Nathan Peterman and C.J. Beathard, which fueled speculation about Taylor’s possible absence. Taylor, 36, is the primary backup to Justin Fields. The other quarterbacks on the roster are Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook, neither of whom have NFL experience. Cook is a rookie free agent from Missouri. Taylor is expected to be a bit inactive, considering he hasn’t practiced since the end of July. Glenn didn’t specify when Taylor is expected to start training. They will have at least five practices before facing the Steelers. Martinez (30 of 51, 351 yards) and Cook (25 of 38, 235 yards) had a lot of participation in the preseason, but they were inconsistent. Martinez threw two interceptions and Cook one. There is a high probability that one of them will be included in the practice squad. Martinez commented: “It’s wait and see for me and for many others who are in the same situation”.I’m sure he’ll be ready for Week 1.
