Jets Prepare for Possible Tyrod Taylor Start Against Buccaneers

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets are on high alert, preparing for the possibility of Tyrod Taylor being the starting quarterback next Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This situation arises because Justin Fields is in the NFL concussion protocol. Jets coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that plans are being drawn up for both quarterbacks, given the uncertainty about Fields’ availability. “We have to get more information to be more precise, but we have to consider that possibility,” Glenn stated on Monday morning. “If Justin can’t play, Tyrod would be the choice, and we would build a suitable plan for him.” Fields suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 30-10 loss against the Buffalo Bills, when defensive end Joey Bosa impacted Fields. The hit caused the back of his helmet to hit the turf, forcing him to leave the game.
Jets to start Tyrod Taylor at quarterback against Buccaneers due to Fields' injury
El quarterback de los Jets, Tyrod Taylor, entró al juego del domingo en relevo de Justin Fields. Si Taylor tiene que ser titular contra los Buccaneers, será su primera aparición como titular desde 2023, cuando jugó para los Giants.
This is Fields’ first documented concussion in the NFL, although he suffered one at Ohio State. He finished Sunday’s game with a low QBR (1.1). Glenn expressed that it would be “difficult for me as a coach” to put Fields as a starter if he doesn’t participate in Wednesday and Thursday practices. The NFL has a five-step concussion protocol, and an independent neurologist must give the go-ahead to the player before he can return to action. The Jets are looking to avoid an 0-3 start to their season, something that hasn’t happened since 2021. Taylor replaced Fields and played two series in garbage time, the last of which ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Taylor (7 of 11, 56 yards) missed the entire preseason due to arthroscopic knee surgery, raising questions about his readiness for a possible start. Glenn responded that that “is not concerning at all… He’s been in this league for a long time. He doesn’t need much to understand exactly what we’re trying to do and what we’re trying to achieve, so I have no concerns about it.” Taylor, 36, has 58 career starts, but hasn’t started since 2023 with the New York Giants. Last season he was on the Jets’ bench, behind Aaron Rodgers, and only participated in cleanup situations.
