Quinnen Williams, Jets Star, Out with Injury

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – The New York Jets are facing a setback on their defensive line. Star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams will be out of action for one to two weeks due to a left calf strain, according to coach Aaron Glenn. Williams’ injury occurred on Thursday during training exercises, forcing him to leave practice. The player did not participate in Friday’s practice.

“We want to make sure this player is okay. We know what he’s capable of. We know what he can do. And listen, we want to keep him out and we’ll see how that goes,” explained Glenn.

Williams, 27, is one of the most important players in the Jets’ defense. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2022, 2023, and again in 2024 as an injury replacement. Before the 2023 season, he signed a four-year, $96 million contract extension. In 2022, Williams missed a game due to the same injury, so he “understands exactly how he has to operate and make sure he goes through the healing process. He’ll be fine,” Glenn added. Williams’ absence poses a challenge for the Jets, especially considering the situation at the defensive tackle position. Without him, the main interior players are Byron Cowart and Jay Tufele, who arrived as free agents on one-year contracts. They also have Derrick Nnadi, another free agent signing on a one-year contract. The Jets also have injuries on the defensive line, as defensive end Jermaine Johnson continues to recover from Achilles surgery. Currently on the non-football injury list, Johnson is expected to be ready for Week 1. In addition, left guard John Simpson (back) will be out of action for one to two weeks, while rookie safety Malachi Moore (oblique), a fourth-round pick, will miss several weeks.
