Daniel Palencia to the Injured List with Shoulder Issues

Chicago Cubs closer Daniel Palencia was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday after suffering a right shoulder strain. Palencia’s injury occurred in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 6-3 loss to Washington. The pitcher entered the game with a 3-1 lead, faced five batters and failed to get any outs, allowing two home runs, a triple, a single and a walk. The average fastball velocity of Palencia’s four-seam fastball was 98.5 mph, 1.1 mph less than his season average, and his splitter averaged 86.8 mph, a decrease of 1.3 mph. Palencia has 22 saves in 25 opportunities. The 25-year-old right-handed pitcher is 1-6 with a 3.00 ERA in his third season in the Major Leagues, all with Chicago.

We’re just going to get treatment and see how he responds in the next few days and then we’ll see what happens.

Craig Counsell, Cubs Manager
Cubs manager Craig Counsell reported that Palencia will remain with the team during the three-game series in Atlanta before the Cubs return home. Ethan Roberts was called up from Triple-A Iowa. Chicago began Monday two games ahead of San Diego for the first National League wild card.
