Jets Reportedly Considering Quarterback Change Following Ownership Criticism
The New York Jets, still without a win this season, are reportedly considering a change at the quarterback position, according to sources close to the team. The decision comes after criticism from owner Woody Johnson towards the current starter, Justin Fields. Johnson, who spoke at the NFL’s fall meeting in New York, made his point of view on the team’s situation clear. Although he praised coach Aaron Glenn for “changing some parts” of the team, he also expressed his concern about Fields’ performance. The Jets gave Fields a two-year, $40 million contract, including $30 million guaranteed, hoping he would become the long-term solution for the position. However, after a season start with a 0-7 record, it seems the team has lost patience. Glenn is expected to announce his decision on Wednesday, before Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Johnson emphasized the need to improve offensive performance, noting that “the offense is simply not working, and you can’t run the ball if you can’t throw the ball.” In his six starts, Fields has recorded a Total QBR of 32.1, the lowest of his career, ranking 31st out of 33 qualified quarterbacks. The player performed well against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1, but his performance has declined in recent weeks. The Jets have only scored seven touchdowns in the last six games, none in the first half. Johnson stated that he does not regret releasing Aaron Rodgers, who is now leading the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 4-2 record. He also expressed his confidence in Glenn, despite the coach’s complicated start. The coach benched Fields at halftime of Sunday’s game, in which the Jets lost to the Denver Broncos. Fields completed only 6 of 12 passes for 46 yards in the first half, suffering three sacks. Tyrod Taylor, who could be the new starter, threw two interceptions in the second half. Taylor, 36, has a record of 28-29-1 as a starter. In the season, he replaced Fields in Week 3 due to a concussion. In seven and a half quarters of play, Taylor completed 43 of 69 passes for 379 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. It’s difficult when you have a quarterback with the rating he has. He has ability, but something just isn’t working… You have to play consistently in that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the rest of the season.
