Jerry Jones Dismisses Micah Parsons’ Trade Request

The owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, has made it clear that he will not consider trading defensive star Micah Parsons, despite the trade request submitted by the player on Friday.

“I think Micah’s world,” Jones said after Saturday’s practice. “And that (request) is just part of the negotiation.”

Jones spent considerable time answering questions about Parsons’ contract situation, the agreement the owner believes they reached in March, and sarcastically mentioned the back problems that have kept the Pro Bowler off the field for nine training camp practices. Parsons made public his request for a trade through a social media post, citing, among other things, “repeated shots” from the organization.

“Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here,” Parsons wrote. “I no longer want to be subject to closed-door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want to be shot for getting injured while giving myself for the organization, our fanatics, and my teammates. I no longer want narratives about me to be created and spread in the media. I had deliberately remained silent in the hope that something would be done.”

Parsons was at training camp on Saturday, starting the training less than 10 yards from Executive Vice President Stephen Jones. However, for the first time in camp, he was not wearing his number 11 practice jersey and spent more time with the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers than with the defense during drills. While the team was doing some 11-on-11 work, Parsons sat on the grass below the platform where Jones watches the practice between the two fields. After practice, the fans near the field chanted “We want Micah!”. Jones reiterated that he and Parsons reached an agreement in March when they met in the owner’s office. In his social media post, Parsons said the visit was supposed to be about leadership and Jones turned it into the contract.

Micah Parsons was at training camp on Saturday, but he wasn’t wearing his number 11 practice jersey and spent more time with the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers than with the defense during drills.Jones said Parsons withdrew that offer from the table. Jones did not reveal specific details of the deal, but referred to “guaranteeing someone almost $200 million” in comments on Saturday.

“What you don’t know is what I offered him and it’s much more than you think I did,” Jones said. “That’s what you don’t know… But my point is that I reached an agreement. Make no mistake. I reached an agreement.”

Since Jones and Parsons met in March, star pass rushers Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, and T.J. Watt have signed extensions. Parsons is scheduled to earn $21.324 million this season with the fifth-year option. Without an extension this season, the Cowboys could use the franchise tag on Parsons from 2026 to 2028, however, that final figure would be at the cost of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. The Cowboys and Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, have not had conversations about an agreement. Jones mentioned that he has made contracts with star players over the years.

“It’s very important that if you want to change the contract we have now, which is what this would do, that I agree with what we change,” Jones said. “That’s why it was so good when we sat down together and spent a lot of time going back and forth adjusting and we had that exercise together (in March).”

What’s up with the agent?

“My experience has been that the agent is not the one who solves the problems you have when you are executing what you said you would do in the contract,” Jones said. “So I like to deal directly with the player when it is of this nature.”

The Cowboys have a recent history of protracted negotiations when it comes to signing their star players. Two years ago, future Hall of Famer Zack Martin missed the first part of training camp in search of a renegotiated deal. Last year, CeeDee Lamb signed a four-year, $136 million contract after missing the entire camp portion in Oxnard. Dak Prescott agreed to a $60 million-a-year deal hours before the start of last year’s season. Ultimately, however, all those agreements have been finalized.

“I’m very happy you mentioned that,” Jones said. “It seems we forgot that less than a year has passed and I paid Dak the highest amount paid in the NFL and I paid a high price for Lamb. Anyone who says I’m not interested in financially rewarding my players hasn’t been looking at the tea leaves. So there’s always negotiation and negotiation is putting the best team on the field. And many times it’s not even a question of ‘deserving’… I enjoy Micah. But as always in any relationship, there are different moods at different times in your relationship. That’s what it is. Don’t lose sleep over it. That’s the only thing I would say to our fans, ‘Don’t lose sleep over it.’
