The Jacksonville Jaguars have released wide receiver Gabe Davis, according to an official announcement this Wednesday morning.
The decision comes approximately 14 months after Davis signed a three-year contract with the team, valued at $39 million.
Davis’s $1.5 million salary and an optional $10 million bonus were fully guaranteed for 2025. This move means the Jaguars will take a $20.3 million salary cap hit.
At the time of signing in March 2024, the Jaguars guaranteed Davis $24 million. However, his impact on the team during the 2024 season was limited.
The situation was further complicated by injuries to other key players on the Jacksonville team, including wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram, who suffered season-ending injuries.
In 10 games during 2024, Davis had 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. His average of 12.7 yards per reception was the lowest of his five-year career. In addition, Davis had two passes that could have been touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 35-16 loss against the Chicago Bears in London on October 13.
The Jaguars have made significant moves to their roster, including trading Kirk to Houston, releasing Engram, and signing wide receiver Dyami Brown in free agency. These changes have cast doubt on Davis’s role for the 2025 season.
Recently, the Jaguars selected Travis Hunter in the draft, moving from the number 5 spot to 2 to secure the Heisman Trophy winner. Hunter will join Brian Thomas Jr., who set franchise records for a rookie in receptions (87) and receiving yards (1,282) in 2024.
These decisions appear to have made Davis expendable, despite the considerable financial impact on the team.
Before joining the Jaguars, Davis accumulated 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns, averaging 16.7 yards per reception, during four seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
