Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has expressed a significant shift in his mindset heading into his fourth season with the team. After a 2024 filled with ups and downs, both on and off the field, Hill is looking for a fresh start.

The player spoke with the local media from the team’s training facilities, after participating in a limited capacity in the Dolphins’ OTA practices. Hill underwent surgery on his right wrist shortly after the end of the 2024 season and is expected to resume catching passes during the summer training camp.

This was the first time Hill addressed the media since he suggested a trade request following Miami’s loss to the [New York Jets](/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets) in January. During that game, Hill was also absent in the second half, a decision that coach Mike McDaniel did not approve.

After the game, Hill expressed his frustration at not qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in his career and suggested the possibility of playing for another team next season. Subsequently, he rectified his comments and publicly apologized.

It was tough, man. Obviously, emotions were high at the time, but at the end of the day, I’m just looking to move forward, hoping I can prove to myself and my teammates that I’m still one of those going after 2,000 receiving yards, one of those chasing playoff dreams and all that cool stuff.

Hill has faced several off-field incidents during his time with the Dolphins, including a domestic altercation in April involving the police and his wife, who filed for divorce days later.

The player has attended church and therapy in the last month, which, according to him, has helped him reflect on his decisions and why he has found it difficult to stay away from headlines that are not related to football.

It’s difficult. The only thing I’m going to say is that, man, money is a crazy thing for a lot of people. But for me, let’s let the details handle themselves, you know? Because at the end of the day, the truth always comes out, right? My job is to be a great father to all my children and to be the best player I can be and to be the best leader I can be for these guys in this locker room, man. So I’ll stand firm on that.

Hill has received praise from his coaches and teammates for his level of involvement this preseason, including the new wide receivers coach, Robert Prince, who mentioned that Hill invited the wide receiver room to dinner at the beginning of the Dolphins’ preseason program.

The five-time All-Pro said he feels completely immersed in the culture the Dolphins are seeking to establish.

I’m doing more. So I’m more involved in that and understanding what the coach is trying to do. I feel like when I first got here, I wouldn’t say I wasn’t fully committed, but having a better understanding of what [McDaniel] is trying to push in the locker room, I feel like I understand it better now. I understand [Tua Tagovailoa] better. I understand Bev [quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, Darrell Bevell]; my new receivers coach, we clicked immediately when he got here. Everybody’s on the same page, man.

Hill was named captain in his first three years with Miami, but he doesn’t think he deserves to be so again in 2025, at least not yet. He still aspires to that title, but understands that he needs to earn the captaincy again after his actions at the end of the 2024 season.

I have to prove it in these OTAs, in training camp. I have to prove it, I have to show myself differently. The mentality has to be different. I don’t feel like I deserve it, and if I didn’t get it, I wouldn’t dwell on it. I wouldn’t worry, you know? I put myself in that position.

Hill recorded 959 receiving yards last season, averaging 56.4 yards per game, his lowest totals since 2019 and 2016, respectively. He played the entire season with a wrist injury he suffered in August, for which doctors indicated he required surgery at the end of the season. Hill postponed the surgery until after the season, but on Wednesday he said he was grateful for the procedure after having been nervous at first.

He also looked noticeably thinner and said he now weighs 183 pounds after playing at 197 pounds when he first arrived in Miami.

I would say it’s something I wanted to do. In recent years, I can obviously run with anyone, run alongside anyone, but I think having that endurance, having that ability not to get tired on the third attempts is very important. So I wanted to slim down and lose body fat. I committed to eating well, training hard every day, and drinking more water.
