INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert suffered a fracture in his left hand during the 31-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The incident occurred on Sunday and will require surgery, scheduled for Monday. Despite the injury, Herbert hopes to play in the Chargers’ next game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 8th in the Monday Night Football.
The injury occurred in the first quarter, when Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn hit Herbert during a play. Chinn’s helmet appeared to hit Herbert’s left hand directly. Despite the injury, Herbert remained in the game, showing clear signs of pain, and threw a touchdown to wide receiver Quentin Johnston on the next play. Subsequently, Herbert went to the locker room with the coaches and missed nine plays while they applied a cast and a glove to his left hand. Herbert himself admitted that the most difficult thing was holding the ball. Due to this, the Chargers didn’t run any plays from the center of the field for the rest of the game. Backup quarterback Trey Lance was prepared to take snaps in any necessary scenario near the end zone, according to Herbert. Two seasons ago, Herbert suffered a fracture in the middle finger of his left hand in a game against the Raiders. On that occasion, the Chargers played primarily from the “shotgun” formation to manage the injury.I’m treating this as if I’m going to play on Monday.

I think, in terms of experience, I’ve been through similar situations, so I think it will be helpful.

With four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on Sunday, Raiders outside linebacker Maxx Crosby shoved Herbert while celebrating after a third-down conversion. The officials penalized Crosby for unsportsmanlike conduct, which led to another celebration by Herbert. A brief confrontation between players ensued, and a discussion occurred between Chargers wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal and Crosby.
Herbert finished the game with 15 of 20 passes completed, 151 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Herbert’s injury comes at a crucial moment in the season, as the Chargers seek to qualify for the postseason for the second consecutive year. Four of the Chargers’ last five opponents were in the playoffs last season. It’s an emotional game and I have nothing but respect for him as a player and as a teammate, but at the end of the day, he could have also kept his cool a little better.
