Vikings’ Harrison Smith Confident in Recovery and Upcoming Return

Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith has revealed significant progress in his recovery from a personal health issue that began last month. Smith expressed his confidence in returning to action in less than three weeks. In his first public statements on the matter, Smith preferred not to go into detail about the nature of the problem, limiting himself to describing it as “physical”, thus dismissing concerns about his mental health. The Vikings are preparing for Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, with a shorter work week after playing on Monday night in Chicago. On Wednesday, the team only had a light practice scheduled. Smith, who practiced last Saturday for the first time since August 11, indicated that he will continue to strive for his return.

I am working to improve my physical condition. I will go out on the field to see how much I can endure and from there I will make decisions. I have already moved and I feel good. Now it’s a matter of volume and conditioning.

The Vikings didn’t place Smith on the injured reserve list at the start of the season, suggesting they expected a quicker recovery than the minimum four-game absence required for players on that list. Smith added that his availability to play is flexible and will depend on whether he can help the team. However, he expects to be back before the four weeks. In addition to Smith, other key Vikings players could miss Sunday night’s game. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw (left knee) is close to returning, but his game participation is uncertain. Inside linebacker Blake Cashman will miss some games due to a right hamstring strain, according to coach Kevin O’Connell. Eric Wilson, a veteran backup, will likely take over the team’s defensive signals. Two other key players, outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and cornerback Jeff Okudah, have been placed in concussion protocol this week. In addition, kick returner Ty Chandler will miss time due to a knee injury, according to O’Connell.
