Andrew Thomas ready to return with the Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – New York Giants star left tackle Andrew Thomas is slated to play for the first time this season on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, unless there is a setback on game day. Thomas has been out of action since he suffered a left foot injury in Week 6 of last season. He underwent Lisfranc surgery in October and was listed as doubtful for the first two weeks. The All-Pro left tackle was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs. He took the majority of first-team reps throughout the week as the Giants hoped for his return, and it went well.

I feel good. Three days in a row practicing, the first time I’ve done it. Starting to increase the volume, to regain my confidence, so I’m sure it’s exciting.

Thomas should provide a massive boost for the Giants (0-2), especially after backup left tackle James Hudson III committed four penalties on the first series last week and was relieved in favor of rookie Marcus Mbow. The Giants have been a different team in the last two years without Thomas. New York has a 3-17 record when Thomas has been out of action due to hamstring and foot injuries in the last two and a half seasons, and has a 6-10 record with him. Keeping Thomas healthy remains a priority, especially with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart potentially entering the lineup at some point this season. It would be much easier to do with Thomas as a mainstay at left tackle. Thomas and coach Brian Daboll said whether or not he would play would be a “last-minute decision” on Sunday. But considering how the foot has responded, there is confidence that he will start. The most important questions now seem to be how much Thomas will be able to play and how he will recover for the coming weeks. He has been extremely cautious after needing an additional procedure in the spring to remove the screws from his foot.
