Jared Goff Remains Optimistic About Changes in the Lions’ Coaching Staff

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The Detroit Lions have started their training camp with new faces, but quarterback Jared Goff doesn’t perceive the changes in the coaching staff to be significant. Despite the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Goff considers adapting to the new strategies a “fun challenge”. The new offensive coordinator, John Morton, and other members of the coaching staff, such as new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, are implementing their own ideas for the 2025 season.

(Morton) just sounds different to my ears, I guess. We’re running a lot of the same things. Some things are different. Some things are new, but I don’t think it’s abnormal compared to any other team adding new things. That’s what we’re doing, and it’s been a good process.

In the three seasons with Johnson directing the offense, Detroit led the NFL in points per game (29.0), including a league record of 33.2 points last season, the first time the Lions led the NFL in points per game since 1954. Morton, although new to the position, is not a stranger to the players. He was previously the passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos for the last two seasons, but was a senior offensive assistant for the Lions in 2022, and is now forging his own path.

Johnny talks all the time about RCE. Recognize, communicate, and execute: that’s important. That’s important for us as coaches, also for the players.

Although it’s early in camp, receiver Jameson Williams has noticed Morton’s aggressiveness in seeking long passes. Williams feels he has improved in this area since last season.

My route running: Coach Johnny Mo is allowing me to run more routes. I knew I could run more routes, but he’s putting me in position to run more routes, so I’m getting better with the cuts and the angles and how to run this route and that route, so I’d say I’m more polished in my route game.

Goff, who finished fifth in the voting for Most Valuable Player last season, threw for 4,629 yards and 37 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also led the Lions to a franchise record of 15 wins before their 2024 season ended with a loss in the NFC divisional round to the Commanders. Goff believes the narrative about the changes in the coaching staff is exaggerated. The quarterback is confident that the current Lions team can continue to perform at the highest offensive level with the weapons they have.

It’s difficult to answer that question of ‘what’s different? What’s different? What’s different?’ Part of it is exactly the same. And part of it is a little different and I’m not going to go into the details of what’s different, but I think the transition to what we were doing last year with him, is much less than you guys are making it seem with the questions.
