In the 23-6 defeat against the Commanders, New York Giants coach Brian Daboll faced questions about quarterback Russell Wilson’s starting position for the upcoming matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The coach’s answers were ambiguous, especially after a game where Jaxson Dart, the first-round pick, acted as a substitute ahead of veteran Jameis Winston. Wilson completed 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions, showing notable ineffectiveness under pressure, with only 2 of 12 passes completed for 26 yards, in addition to two sacks and two runs.

Let’s analyze the game and evaluate it.

Daboll did not confirm whether Wilson would be the starter against the Cowboys. “I have confidence in Russ,” he said, adding that the team needs to improve overall. “This game is not Russell Wilson’s fault. I’m making that clear. We have to do a better job in all aspects.” The Giants managed only 231 total offensive yards, averaging 3.2 yards per carry and two fumbles in the red zone.

I think the game was simple in the sense that we didn’t convert in the red zone.

The main question now is Wilson’s tenure as a starter, after Dart had a standout preseason. Daboll chose Dart over Winston as the second quarterback in the opening game. Winston was the third emergency quarterback.

I think he earned it.

Neither Dart nor Winston were available to speak after the game. Although the Giants had a plan for Dart, they did not use it in the game. Wilson played all 62 offensive plays.

The presence of Dart in the bank only increases the pressure on Wilson. The player, 10-time Pro Bowl selection, says he doesn’t feel additional pressure.

I only focus on what we can control. We competed with everything we had.

For the Giants, the game seemed like an extension of the last two seasons, with an offense that struggled to score points. They finished in 30th and 31st place in points per game in the last two years. There was optimism in the preseason that Wilson would lead a more efficient offense. However, at least for one week, not much difference was seen.

Everyone on the offense, including the coaches and players, needs to improve. We had six points.
