Sauce Gardner: Calf Injury, Not Achilles

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner suffered a calf injury during Sunday’s game, according to coach Shane Steichen on Monday. Although tests ruled out damage to the Achilles tendon, the calf injury will keep Gardner off the playing fields for an indefinite period. Steichen clarified that, for the moment, the Colts are not considering placing Gardner on the injured reserve list.

“His Achilles is fine,” Steichen declared, referring to the results of the tests performed on Gardner.

Gardner’s injury occurred in the 20-16 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday. The incident happened on the Texans’ second offensive play, away from the main action, on a non-contact play. Gardner, selected in the fourth position of the 2022 draft and two-time first-team All-Pro, arrived at the Colts from the New York Jets at the trade deadline, in exchange for two first-round picks. The game on Sunday was Gardner’s third with the Colts since his arrival.
