Oronde Gadsden II: The New Chargers Star
In the thrilling Thursday night matchup, where the Chargers triumphed 37-10 against the Vikings, rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden II proved his worth by scoring an 8-yard touchdown against Vikings safety Joshua Metellus. Gadsden’s celebration, although incurring an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, marked the beginning of a stellar night. Despite the team’s recent penalties, the reaction to the Gadsden celebration was enthusiastic. For the Chargers, this was the presentation of their new star to the world of American football.Gadsden finished the game with five receptions, accumulating 77 yards and a touchdown, solidifying his rise as the emerging figure of the Chargers. The previous week, during the tribute to the legendary tight end Antonio Gates, Gadsden had a historic performance for a rookie, with seven receptions, 164 yards and a touchdown. Following his performance on Thursday, Gadsden became the first rookie tight end since Mike Ditka in 1961 to record 240 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a two-game span.“He’s incredibly talented. What surprises me most is how he plays, as if he’s been in the NFL for two, three, or four years. To me, he seems like a four or five-year player.”
Jim Harbaugh, Chargers Coach
In recent seasons, the Chargers have struggled to find consistency at the tight end position. Although they had Will Dissly for blocking, they lacked a receiving threat. The Chargers selected Gadsden, a former 6’5″ and 250-pound receiver, transformed into a tight end, and son of former Miami Dolphins player Oronde Gadsden. In training camp, Gadsden showed flashes of his potential, although he did not participate in the first two games, something that, according to the coaches, frustrated him, which was well received.“As soon as he got to camp, we knew he was going to be really good. He made a lot of plays, learned the offense very quickly and always found a way to be open, and that’s what he did tonight. We’re definitely going to give him the ball as much as we can, because good things happen when he has it.”
Justin Herbert, Quarterback
Gadsden confessed that he always dreamed of performances like the ones in the last two weeks. Although his rise was delayed a bit, Gadsden is on track to become a key player in the offense.“I refer to this guy’s attitude, what he’s made of, how he approaches each day. Always trying to improve, very competitive, very detail-oriented, he wants to perfect his game as much as possible.”
Greg Roman, Offensive Coordinator
“It doesn’t matter. You just have to make the most of the opportunity you’re given.”
