Amid criticism, New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields has downplayed the need for a conversation with team owner Woody Johnson. Fields, who is currently facing difficulties on the field and could lose his position to Tyrod Taylor, responded to Johnson’s statements about his performance.

I don’t think talking to him is going to do anything. It won’t make me play better. It won’t give me more confidence on the field, so I don’t think there’s necessarily a point in talking about it, and I doubt he’ll come talk to me.

The Jets player stated that he was unaware of Johnson’s comments until reporters informed him, although the topic was addressed by Aaron Glenn in a team meeting in the morning. Fields revealed that his relationship with Johnson is limited, with brief encounters before the games. The quarterback stated that the owner’s criticism doesn’t bother him. He acknowledged that he needs to improve his game and that, as a quarterback, it’s natural that he receives most of the blame.

Of course, everyone knows that I need to play better and that we need to play better as a team. And, of course, no matter how the offense does as a unit, I’m going to get blamed. And I understand that, that comes with the job. You can’t let anything affect your mind.

Fields, whose contract extends until 2026, avoided answering questions about the possibility of requesting a transfer. Owner Johnson generated controversy by referring to Fields’ poor performance, mentioning his low rating and the need to complete passes. Aaron Glenn indicated that he is “on the same page” as Johnson regarding the staff. Glenn did not name the starter for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, seeking to maintain a competitive advantage. All indications suggest that Taylor could replace Fields.
