Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Simone Biles Shine at the ESPYS

In a night filled with stars, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Simone Biles were awarded as the best male and female athletes at the ESPYS. The ceremony, which celebrates the best in sports, recognized the extraordinary performance of both athletes in the last year. Gilgeous-Alexander, who led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA championship, also took home the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and the top scorer award. In his acknowledgments, the player highlighted the importance of the support of his closest circle.

For her part, Simone Biles, an Olympic medalist on multiple occasions, was also recognized with the award for best performance in a championship for her outstanding participation in the Paris Games, where she obtained three gold medals and one silver medal. In addition to these individual recognitions, the Philadelphia Eagles were honored as the best team, following their Super Bowl victory.

  • Arthur Ashe Courage Award: Oscar Robertson, basketball legend and Hall of Famer, was recognized for his courage and leadership in the fight for players’ rights.
  • Icon Award: Diana Taurasi and Alex Morgan, iconic figures in women’s basketball and soccer respectively, shared this award in recognition of their successful careers and their impact on the sport.
  • Pat Tillman Service Award: David Walters and Erin Regan, former athletes who have dedicated their time to community service, were honored for their work.
  • Jimmy V Perseverance Award: Katie Schumacher-Cawley, Penn State women’s volleyball coach, received this award for her courage and determination in facing breast cancer.
  • Gatorade Players of the Year: Cameron Boozer and Jane Hedengren were named the best male and female players of the year by Gatorade.

The monologue of the presenter Shane Gillis

The opening monologue by comedian Shane Gillis, who hosted the ceremony, generated mixed reactions from the audience. His jokes, some of which were directed at prominent figures and with a controversial tone, were not well received by everyone present. Gillis closed his participation by acknowledging the disparity of reactions and concluded by saying:

I see that many of you didn’t like it and that’s okay. That’s all from me. That went exactly as we all thought it would. I don’t know why this happened.
