Evan Engram, ruled out for the game against the Chargers

Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram will have to wait another week to prove his worth on the team’s offense. A back injury will keep him out of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Broncos coach Sean Payton reported that Engram’s injury occurred during last Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. In that game, Engram had a 12-yard reception on two attempts, participating in 25 plays. Engram, who signed a two-year, $23 million contract with the Broncos in March, also suffered a calf injury during the second half of the Week 1 victory against the Tennessee Titans. So far this season, he has accumulated 4 receptions for 33 yards on 6 attempts, figures below the expectations the team had for him. The tight end position has been a weak spot for the Broncos in recent seasons. Last year, Lucas Krull led the team’s tight ends with 19 receptions. In comparison, 16 teams had two tight ends with more than 19 receptions in 2024, and the Cincinnati Bengals managed to have three of their tight ends reach that mark.

It will undoubtedly play an important role for us.

Despite Engram’s recent injuries, Payton is confident that the player will have a significant impact on the team’s offense. Another key player for the Broncos, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, was also ruled out for Friday’s game due to a hamstring injury. Greenlaw did not participate in the preseason and missed the Broncos’ first two games.
