Fields Ignores Jets Owner Criticism: “It Doesn’t Affect Me”

The New York Jets quarterback, Justin Fields, downplayed criticism from team owner Woody Johnson, stating that he will not seek a conversation to clarify the situation. Fields, who has struggled on the field, does not expect Johnson to get in touch with him.

I don’t think talking to him is going to do any good. It’s not going to make me play better. It’s not going to give me more confidence on the field, so I don’t think there’s necessarily a reason to talk about that, and I doubt he’ll come talk to me.

The quarterback situation with the Jets has become complicated, with Fields possibly losing his spot to Tyrod Taylor. Johnson, during an NFL meeting, blamed Fields for the team’s 0-7 season start. Fields indicated that he was unaware of Johnson’s comments until reporters informed him. The relationship between Fields and Johnson is limited, with brief conversations prior to the matches. The quarterback downplayed the owner’s criticism.

Of course, everyone knows that I need to play better and that we need to play better as a team. And, of course, no matter how the offense performs as a unit, I will be blamed. And I understand, that’s what the job entails. You can’t let anything affect your mind.

Fields, under contract until 2026, avoided answering questions about a possible transfer request. Johnson sparked controversy by alluding to Fields’ poor performance. Coach Aaron Glenn and Johnson are “on the same page” regarding the staff. Glenn did not name the starter for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, seeking a competitive advantage.
