EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson has pointed out the need for the team to be “less predictable” to improve their offense, following the 34-17 loss to the New York Giants. Johnson primarily focused on the running game. Philadelphia entered the game ranked 26th in the league in rushing yards, with 95.3 yards per game, after finishing second in that category in 2024 with 179.3. Saquon Barkley, reigning Offensive Player of the Year, gained 58 yards on 12 carries against his former team. This was the fifth time in six games that he was limited to 60 yards or less on the ground.

It seems much harder than it should be. Perhaps, from now on, have a little more variety, attack the perimeter.

Johnson emphasized the importance of identifying the keys that could be revealing offensive strategies to the defense, and the need to “keep the defenses guessing”. The player clarified that it is not about “pointing fingers” and specifically, the new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo is not being blamed.

I’m with Kevin until the end. A lot comes down to execution. We’ll review the recording and see what we have to fix, but from now on, maybe more efficient, less predictable and capitalize on the big plays and explosions.

Barkley, for his part, offered a different perspective, noting that there was also a level of predictability in last year’s offense, and even so, the Eagles achieved a high level of success.

I think we also have to get back to that attitude, that mindset, no matter what people are trying to do. That’s something I’m looking for.

The Eagles fell to 4-2 on the season. They have been outgained in yards in each of their first six games, being the first Super Bowl defending champion to achieve this. They also tie the longest streak of being outgained in yards by any defending champion at any point in a season. This is their first time suffering consecutive defeats since the 2023 season. They have a short break before trying to get back on track against the Minnesota Vikings next week.

You play the game to win. Obviously, we’re competitive in that in trying to figure it out. We have some work to do.
