Dolphins Cut Cam Smith
The Miami Dolphins have made the decision to cut former second-round draft pick Cam Smith from the non-football illness list, as announced on Tuesday, ending the cornerback’s time with the team before his third NFL season. Smith was selected by the Dolphins at the 51st overall position in the 2023 draft, despite already having renowned cornerbacks on the roster. As a rookie, Smith played in 15 games, primarily on special teams, as it took him time to earn the trust of then-defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Following Xavien Howard’s departure, the Dolphins brought in Kendall Fuller. Smith battled injuries last season and was on the injured reserve list for the first seven weeks of the year. He returned to play six games in 2024, including a maximum of 133 defensive snaps. After the Dolphins released Fuller and traded Jalen Ramsey this offseason, Smith faced the clearest opportunity of his career, which came accompanied by a public challenge from general manager Chris Grier.Smith was relegated on the depth chart behind Kendall Sheffield and Storm Duck, and ultimately missed most of training camp due to an injury. He was placed on the NFI list before the start of the season for undisclosed reasons. The former South Carolina standout started for two years with the Gamecocks and earned second-team All-SEC honors in 2021 and 2022. He was a college teammate of Grier’s son, Landon, at South Carolina.“Cam Smith has to deliver at the end of the day. He has to stay healthy and be on the field,” Grier said in April. “He’s shown some flashes, but this is a very important year. He knows what’s expected because we can’t wait for him anymore.”
