J.K. Dobbins Joins the Broncos: “An Obvious Step” Towards Success

Running back J.K. Dobbins, after signing a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos, expressed that joining the team was an “obvious” decision, motivated by his belief in the team’s potential to compete for the Super Bowl. After his first practice at minicamp, Dobbins detailed the reasons that led him to choose the Broncos.

“The defense is really good, the quarterback is amazing, I like the running back group and the offensive line is also incredible. It was a simple decision, coach Sean Payton… I know they will coach me well here”.

J.K. Dobbins
Dobbins, who had his best season in terms of rushing yards with 905 yards last season, played for the Los Angeles Chargers. Now, he will face his former team in the AFC West and will seek to lead the Broncos to victory in the Super Bowl. The player also acknowledged that the situation with the Chargers was a bit strange.

“Yes, that was a little weird. But that was something my agent had to handle… I wish them luck, now I’m a Bronco, they’ll have to see me twice a year. Of course, I’ll have a reason to prove my worth, but here I’m concerned with winning. I don’t just want to beat the Chargers, I want a ring. That’s my goal, simply to bring a Super Bowl to this city”.

J.K. Dobbins
Dobbins signed a one-year contract for $2.75 million that could exceed $5 million with incentives. The 26-year-old player visited the Broncos’ facilities last week, and negotiations had been ongoing since then. In a Week 6 game last season, Dobbins ran for 96 yards on 25 carries in the Chargers’ victory over the Broncos.

“I thought he was one of the best runners we saw (last season)… His intelligence on third down, he’s a runner for all three downs… in one-on-one he was a difficult tackle for us, I’m glad he’s a Bronco.”

Vance Joseph, Broncos defensive coordinator
Javonte Williams, who led the Broncos in carries and rushing yards, signed with the Dallas Cowboys in free agency. Dobbins seems like a good option for the third-down role as the Broncos prepare in training camp and the preseason.

“Another good American football player, we are interested in those guys, we’ll see how it develops. There are no established roles yet… (But) when a play is blocked, you want to see that yardage and something more. Good runners add a little spice to the matter and that’s important… when you see the consistency (of Dobbins) it’s not an accident… we’ll see how all the carries go”.

Sean Payton, Broncos coach
The Broncos have other running backs who had carries last season, such as Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin, and Tyler Badie. McLaughlin had the most rushing yards and touchdowns. The Broncos also selected RJ Harvey in the April draft. Payton believes Harvey could be a key player in any situation.
