ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The world of American football mourns the loss of Tracy Scroggins, former defensive end for the Detroit Lions. Scroggins, recognized for his outstanding ability to generate plays, passed away at the age of 56.

The news was confirmed by the Detroit Lions this Monday. The cause of death has not been revealed at this time.

Scroggins left an indelible mark on the franchise’s history, accumulating 60.5 sacks in his 10 seasons with the Lions. Since quarterback sacks became an official statistic in 1982, only Robert Porcher and Michael Cofer surpassed his mark in team history.

His most outstanding season was in 1995, where he reached career highs in sacks (9.5) and tackles (45). In addition, he forced two fumbles and scored a touchdown after recovering one of them. In seven seasons, he achieved at least six sacks.

Scroggins played in 142 regular season games, starting 89 of them. He contributed significantly to the Lions reaching the playoffs five times, after being selected by the team in the second round of the 1992 draft.

Originally from Checotah, Oklahoma, Scroggins excelled in American football, basketball, and track and field during his time in high school. Subsequently, he studied at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas and shone at the University of Tulsa.
