Dak Prescott: Cowboys’ Leader in Pursuit of Excellence
In his tenth season, Dak Prescott solidifies himself as the player with the longest tenure on the Dallas Cowboys, following the retirement of Zack Martin and the departure of DeMarcus Lawrence.
“It’s amazing how fast time flies,” Prescott commented after the second activity organized by the Cowboys’ offseason program.

The quarterback, who will turn 32 in July, was selected in the fourth round in 2016 and has been a starter in the 122 games he has played. His 2024 season was cut short after eight games due to a hamstring injury that required surgery.
Although not yet cleared for full contact, Prescott participated in all aspects of the team’s activity on Tuesday, taking all first-team reps in seven-on-seven drills.
“I can practically do everything. I feel good. I’m not cleared for contact, but there’s still time for that. I’m participating in team activities and I feel good. I’m just trying to stay that way,” Prescott said.

Prescott assured he did not feel behind, despite the rehabilitation work after the surgery.
“My offseason started much earlier, that’s why I’m ahead, in addition to working with the director of rehabilitation, Britt Brown, and with the training staff and my personal trainer, Luke Wilson,” he explained.

At the beginning of the offseason, the feeling within the organization was that Prescott would be limited in his return from surgery.
“People say a lot of things about me. I just show up and control what I can control, staying healthy. I feel good. I just try to maintain the energy and make sure I keep improving,” Prescott added.

Prescott has missed games due to injuries in four of the last five seasons. In five of the seven seasons in which Prescott has started at least 12 games, the Cowboys have reached the playoffs, although they have not advanced beyond the divisional round.
In 2023, Prescott finished second in the MVP voting and led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes. This offseason, the Cowboys added wide receiver George Pickens in a trade and selected guard Tyler Booker in the first round of the draft. In addition, they have Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb for the offseason, after he missed last year’s training while waiting for a contract extension.
“He looks good. He’s doing what he normally does. He’s getting most of the work with the starters. We’re rotating some players, but he looks good. I think he’s progressing well,” commented coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Last summer, Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million extension, making him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history. Since then, he has witnessed changes in the organization, from the head coach (Mike McCarthy to Schottenheimer) to the locker room.
“There’s reflection here and there, especially when you’re injured, as I was. Different games. There was time for that reflection. And, yes, it makes you more humble, more hungry, and blessed. Blessed to be here. Blessed to be doing what I do, walking through these doors every day, playing the game I love,” Prescott concluded.
