Maxx Crosby Reveals Feelings After Trade Failure with the Ravens

Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby expressed his frustration and confusion at the Ravens’ decision to cancel a trade agreement that would have taken him to Baltimore in exchange for two first-round picks, due to medical concerns.

“No one will admit the real truth. In the end, it doesn’t matter. I am where I am supposed to be,” Crosby declared.

Crosby described the week as a whirlwind, going from surprise at the possible end of his time in Las Vegas, after seven seasons and five Pro Bowl selections, to the excitement of a new opportunity with the Ravens. The player reported that the Ravens transported him first class to Washington D.C. due to the lack of direct flights to Baltimore. The next day, he underwent physical tests and an MRI, but did not speak with general manager Eric DeCosta all day.

“I thought I was going to see [DeCosta] when I arrived. I don’t know why. I’m not going to speculate,” Crosby said. “He had just made the trade and I didn’t see him for five hours.”

Before leaving the facilities, Crosby met with Ravens head coach Jesse Minter, and DeCosta, sensing a strange atmosphere. “I shook [Minter]’s hand, and he had a blank expression,” Crosby added. Crosby recounted his fear when DeCosta informed him that one of the doctors had concerns about his knee and they wanted to get more opinions. The 28-year-old player underwent surgery in January to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. Although he knew he needed the surgery in the fall, he continued playing until the Raiders decided to sideline him for the last two games of the season, a decision that frustrated Crosby. Crosby is expected to be ready to play at training camp in July. “That’s a lot for your mind,” Crosby said. “… At that moment, I was scared.” Crosby returned to his hotel and spoke with his agents, CJ LaBoy and Doug Hendrickson, who indicated that they believed Baltimore would cancel the trade. Then, Crosby spoke with a member of the Ravens staff, who assured him that the team still planned to finalize the deal. Five minutes later, LaBoy informed Crosby that Baltimore had canceled the deal.

“I was like, ‘Shit!'”, Crosby said. “… I told [LaBoy], ‘I want to get out of here'”.

The Ravens sent him on a private plane back to Las Vegas that same night. Crosby returned to the Raiders’ facilities the next day. DeCosta expressed his disappointment with the decision. Less than 24 hours later, the Ravens signed defensive end Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals to a four-year, $112 million contract. Crosby reiterated his commitment to the Raiders and hopes to use the trade situation as motivation for next season.

“I’m here. I’m meant to be a Raider,” Crosby said. “… I’m in this for life until that changes, which I don’t foresee, but you never know in this damn league.”
