La’el Collins, among the players to be cut by the Cowboys
In a move marking the start of the season, the Dallas Cowboys are preparing to reduce their roster to 53 players. Among the players who have been informed of their release is veteran offensive lineman La’el Collins, according to sources close to the team.
Collins joined the Cowboys during training camp, seeking to strengthen the offensive line in the face of injuries to Tyler Guyton, Rob Jones, and Saahdiq Charles.
During the preseason, Collins played roles of both right tackle and left tackle. Previously, between 2015 and 2021, he was a starter in 71 games with the Cowboys, playing in the positions of left guard and right tackle. In 2022, Collins played for the Cincinnati Bengals before suffering a knee injury at the end of the season.
Last year, Collins was in training camp with the Buffalo Bills.
The Cowboys coaches praised his post-practice work with the younger offensive and defensive linemen during camp.
On the other hand, the Cowboys activated cornerback Trevon Diggs from the physically unable to perform list.
Diggs underwent surgery in January to address a cartilage issue, but chose to do his rehabilitation in South Florida, leading the Cowboys to apply a $500,000 reduction clause in his contract. If he were to start the season on the physically unable to perform list, he would miss at least the first four games.
Diggs stated after Friday’s preseason game that he is not sure if he will be able to play in the season opener on September 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but that he has intensified his rehabilitation work in recent weeks.
The Cowboys have practice on Monday, and coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed his hope that Diggs can participate on the field this week. The coach mentioned the possibility of a “pitch count” regarding snaps in the opening game, if all goes well for Diggs.
Teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday.
