The Washington Commanders bolster their defense with the addition of veteran safety Darnell Savage, according to his agent Seth Katz.

This acquisition comes at a crucial moment, as the team’s secondary has been affected by injuries.

Starting safety Will Harris had to leave last Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a leg injury, and it is still unknown how long he will be out of action.

Additionally, Percy Butler, another backup safety and key special teams player, also left the game with a hip injury.

Savage was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. He had signed a three-year contract with $12.5 million guaranteed, worth up to $21.75 million in the 2024 offseason. However, the Jaguars have a new coaching staff and a new front office in 2025, which led to the decision to dispense with his services.

Darnell Savage was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the 2019 draft, where Jason Simmons, current Washington defensive pass game coordinator, was the secondary coach.

Savage played five seasons with the Packers, starting in 69 games, before signing with Jacksonville. Last season, he started in the 13 games in which he participated, but did not start in the first two games of this season.
