Deatrich Wise Jr. Suffers Injury and Misses the Season
A tough loss for the Washington Commanders. Defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. suffered a left quadriceps tear and will be out for the rest of the season.
The injury occurred during the 27-18 defeat against Green Bay last Thursday, which will require surgery that will end his participation in the season.
This injury represents a hard blow for Washington’s defense, as Wise, with his height of 6 feet 5 inches and 280 pounds, brought strength and size to the team. The Commanders signed him to a one-year contract during the offseason to reinforce a defense that struggled against the run last season, finishing in 30th place.
The team is also waiting to learn the severity of the injury to running back Austin Ekeler, who left the game with what the team fears is a ruptured Achilles tendon.
In addition, two other starters, receiver Noah Brown and tight end John Bates, also suffered groin injuries and left the game. The severity of their injuries is not yet known.
Wise’s injury occurred at 7 minutes and 34 seconds of the second quarter, and the severity of the situation immediately became apparent. His teammates knelt on the field and then almost the entire team gathered around him. He was taken off the field on a stretcher.
Wise, 31, posted a message on Instagram expressing his gratitude for the prayers and support.
The message said: “This was an unfortunate experience, but when you give so much to the game and do everything you can to improve for yourself and for the success of your teams, it can seem like there’s a lot to play for. When you stop, it can feel like everything around you also stops.”
He also referenced his faith and said that “on the bright side”, he will be able to spend more time with his family.
The Commanders appreciated the depth of their defensive line. Wise provided the necessary strength and was considered a strong leader.
They also have Dorance Armstrong and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, as well as Von Miller, whom they primarily hired to pressure the passer. Defensive end Jalyn Holmes is on their practice squad. In August, they released veteran Clelin Ferrell.
Wise spent his first eight seasons in New England.
