ASHBURN, Va. – The Washington Commanders have made the decision to release kicker Matt Gay this Monday, a day after his performance in the game against the Miami Dolphins. Gay missed two crucial attempts during the game, including an attempt that could have meant victory for his team. The defeat against the Dolphins was finalized in overtime, with a final score of 16-13. The kicker joined the Commanders in April on a one-year contract that included $4.25 million guaranteed, this being the largest amount secured for a kicker on a single-year contract. In the game, Gay missed a 56-yard field goal attempt with 15 seconds left in regulation, which would have given Washington a 16-13 lead. Previously, he also missed a 51-yard attempt.

I feel 100% responsible for the defeat.
