Anthony Richardson Suffers Pinky Injury During Game Against the Ravens

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. experienced a concerning injury to the pinky finger on his throwing hand during the game against the Baltimore Ravens. The situation occurred after being brought down by an unblocked defender. The injury occurred when linebacker David Ojabo tackled him, leaving his finger visibly twisted at an angle of almost 90 degrees. The team’s medical staff attempted to relocate the finger, but Richardson was ruled out of the game.

“It was weird. He hit me, then I was trying to secure the ball and I just looked down. I saw my finger going a different direction. I thought, ‘Maybe I’m tripping.’ And I looked at it again. It was definitely like that.”

Despite the incident, Richardson indicated that he felt relatively well, although he acknowledged that there would be swelling and sensitivity in his finger. This mishap interrupted an important night for Richardson, who had completed two of his first three passes for 21 yards. Head coach Shane Steichen had planned to give Richardson most of the first half as part of the evaluation of the two quarterbacks. Now, with Richardson’s short participation and his uncertain health status, Steichen is not sure how he will proceed. Richardson admitted he didn’t anticipate the blitz by linebacker Ojabo, but should have been more aware of the possibility due to the five-man protection without a tight end or running back to help block. After the injury, Richardson tested his ability to grip and throw the ball, initially with difficulty. Richardson’s injury history, combined with his inconsistent play, led the Colts to add Daniel Jones in the offseason. In addition to Richardson’s injury, the Colts confirmed a season-ending knee injury for third-round pick Justin Walley, who was on track to be the team’s third cornerback.

“A big blow,” Steichen said. “He was having a great camp. His man-to-man coverage skills were great. He was making a lot of plays in practice, too, before it happened. Just an unfortunate situation for him.”
