The Kansas City Chiefs and defensive end George Karlaftis have reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension for $93 million, including $62 million guaranteed. The agreement ensures the continuity of the key player until the 2030 season.

Karlaftis, who still had two years remaining on his rookie contract and is in his prime, has demonstrated his long-term commitment to the Chiefs.

The general manager, Brett Veach, and coach Andy Reid, prioritized signing Karlaftis after completing the offseason goals. Previously, the Chiefs signed right guard Trey Smith to a four-year, $94 million contract extension.

In his three years with the Chiefs, Karlaftis has accumulated 24.5 sacks, standing out for his tenacity and constant pursuit of the opposing quarterback. His effectiveness has been evident in individual matchups and in collaboration with Chris Jones, the team’s best defender.

Last season, Karlaftis led the Chiefs with eight sacks and 28 quarterback hits, in addition to five passes defended and 35 tackles. His performance elevated in the playoffs, with four sacks and eight quarterback hits.

This agreement positions Karlaftis as the tenth highest-paid defensive end among pass rushers, with an average annual salary of $23.25 million, including incentives. Karlaftis is expected to play an even more important role on defense under the direction of Steve Spagnuolo, alongside Jones and linebacker Nick Bolton.

Karlaftis is the first player from the memorable 2022 draft class of the Chiefs to sign a second contract with the team.

The group of young players from 2022 has contributed to the Chiefs’ success, who have won consecutive championships and reached the final for the third time in a row. In 10 playoff games, Karlaftis has been a key player, with eight sacks, 16 quarterback hits, two fumble recoveries, and one pass defended.

The Chiefs have been in contact with Smith, Karlaftis, and McDuffie to secure their place on the team.

The New York Jets signed cornerback Sauce Gardner to a four-year, $120.4 million contract extension.
